Chuck Ricketts’ Baja Siena Railroad & Navigation (On30)

Some of you may remember Chuck’s Sherwood, Shelton and Sarazen (SS&S) layout back from the 2012 NNGC, or from an article in the NG Gazette. He has moved to a new house and is building a totally new railroad, with the help of Jim Elder.

This 1920s era layout, while purely a fantasy, is also operations oriented, like the old SS&S. This island style layout is built in sections. It features hand laid track with code 83 rail, soldered to PC board cross ties. Chuck uses “Fast Tracks” turnout jigs for the switches. The imaginary setting is Mexico, on an island in the Sea of Cortez. A barge from the mainland enhances operating possibilities. The railroad serves a mezcal tequila distillery; a mine; a pottery factory, and a cannery. All are represented by uniquely designed and built structures. Passenger service moves workers and shoppers around the island.

Nearly vertical rock walls create scenic divides on the railroad, providing backdrops for the different scenes. While definitely not the usual layout, the BS is designed in the manner of previous masters, such as John Allen, Malcom Furlow and John Olson.
